Audio Interface Not Working on Mac
Interface not recognized, Thunderbolt dropouts, "No Hardware Found" - diagnosed and fixed
Your Interface Worked Yesterday. Now It Doesn't.
You plug in your Focusrite, Apollo, or MOTU and Pro Tools says "No Hardware Found." Or it shows up but audio cuts in and out. Or it worked fine on Monterey but stopped after updating to Sonoma. Maybe the interface powers on but your Mac doesn't see it at all.
These problems sit right at the intersection of Mac hardware, macOS drivers, and audio interface firmware. Most repair shops can't help because they don't understand the audio side. Most studio techs can't help because they don't do hardware diagnostics. We do both.
Symptoms We Diagnose
"No Hardware Found"
Pro Tools can't see your interface. The Playback Engine menu shows "Built-in Output" only. Could be a driver issue, a Thunderbolt/USB controller failure on the Mac, or the interface itself.
Interface Disappears Mid-Session
Your interface connects fine initially but drops out during recording or playback. Audio stops, Pro Tools throws an error, and you have to unplug and replug. Often a bus power, cable, or port issue.
No Audio In or Out
The interface shows up in Audio MIDI Setup and Pro Tools sees it, but there's no audio passing. Usually an I/O setup issue, but can also be a hardware problem with the interface's converters or the Mac's bus controller.
Thunderbolt Interface Issues
Thunderbolt interfaces like UA Apollo, Avid HDX, and MOTU 828 rely on specific Thunderbolt controller behavior. macOS updates can change how Thunderbolt negotiates, breaking what worked before.
USB Power Problems
Bus-powered interfaces like the Focusrite Scarlett or MOTU M4 need consistent USB power. A failing USB controller, bad hub, or worn port can deliver inconsistent power causing clicks, dropouts, or disconnects.
Post-Update Failures
Updated macOS and now your interface doesn't work? macOS updates can break drivers, change security permissions, or alter how the system handles audio device enumeration. We sort out the compatibility chain.
Interfaces We See Most Often
We work with all audio interfaces, but these are the ones we troubleshoot most frequently:
Scarlett 2i2, 4i4, 18i20. Bus-powered USB interfaces that are sensitive to USB port quality and power delivery. Common issues: not recognized after macOS update, intermittent dropouts, one channel stops working.
Apollo Twin, x4, x6, x8, x16. Thunderbolt interfaces with onboard DSP. Common issues: Thunderbolt connection dropping, "device not found" after sleep/wake, Console app not seeing the unit.
PCIe and Thunderbolt-based Pro Tools HD systems. Common issues: card not recognized, DSP errors, DigiLink cable problems, Thunderbolt chassis compatibility with newer Macs.
MOTU M2, M4, 828, UltraLite. USB and Thunderbolt models. Common issues: sample rate mismatch, clock source confusion, driver compatibility after macOS updates.
PreSonus, RME, Steinberg, Apogee, Behringer, Audient - we work with all of them. The diagnostic process is the same regardless of brand.
Is It the Mac or the Interface?
This is the question that trips up most people. You can spend hours swapping cables, reinstalling drivers, and searching forums without ever getting an answer.
Bring both in. We'll look at your Mac, your interface, and how they connect. We can check ports, bus controllers, driver status, and OS compatibility to help you figure out which side has the problem. If it's the Mac, we fix it. If it's the interface, we'll let you know so you can get it serviced by the manufacturer. We've built and configured Macs for professional studios including Doppler Studios - we know what these setups need to work right.
Our Diagnostic Process
Hardware Inspection
We check your Mac's Thunderbolt and USB-C ports, inspect for physical damage, and diagnose bus controller and power delivery issues that could be causing interface problems.
Isolate the Problem
We look at how your Mac and interface connect, check driver status, OS compatibility, and system configuration to determine whether the issue is Mac-side or interface-side.
Driver and OS Verification
We verify your macOS version is compatible with your interface and Pro Tools version. We check driver installations, security permissions (especially Input Monitoring and Microphone access), and Audio MIDI Setup configuration.
Fix and Verify
Whether it's a USB controller repair, Thunderbolt port fix, OS reconfiguration, or hardware replacement, we fix the root cause and verify everything works with your actual interface and session before you pick up.
Audio Interface FAQ
Usually yes. macOS updates frequently change how the system handles audio devices. Sometimes it's a driver that needs updating, sometimes it's a security permission that got reset, and sometimes the fix is rolling back to a compatible macOS version. We'll determine the best path and handle it.
Absolutely. Bring the interface, the cable you normally use, and any hubs or adapters in your signal chain. We'll test the entire connection path exactly as you use it in your studio.
Yes. A worn or damaged USB-C port can deliver inconsistent power and data, causing intermittent disconnects that look like driver problems. We see this a lot - especially on MacBooks that have been plugged and unplugged thousands of times. Port repair or replacement is something we handle regularly.
They can. Not all USB hubs deliver consistent power or handle audio-class devices properly. Bus-powered interfaces are especially sensitive to hub quality. If possible, connect your interface directly to your Mac. If you need a hub, we can recommend ones that work reliably with audio interfaces.
On some Macs, not all Thunderbolt/USB-C ports are on the same controller. One controller may be failing while the other works fine. We test every port individually and can repair or replace failing Thunderbolt controllers at the board level.
